White House Launches Federal Crackdown on Welfare Fraud as Minnesota Faces DOJ Investigation

Federal crackdown on welfare fraud begins. DOJ investigation launched. Minnesota benefits under review. What this means for SNAP and Medicaid.

Federal officials announced a sweeping crackdown on welfare fraud on January 14, 2026. The White House confirmed that the Department of Justice will lead prosecutions targeting alleged fraud in government benefit programs.

Minnesota has been named as a focal point in the investigation. Officials say the state is facing federal scrutiny over possible misuse of taxpayer-funded programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and other assistance services.

The White House posted on X that “Minnesota fraudsters are being held accountable.” The statement references ongoing federal reviews and calls for immediate action to stop what officials describe as large-scale abuse of public resources.

This comes as part of the administration’s America First policy agenda. The goal is to protect taxpayer money and ensure benefits go only to eligible American citizens.

Federal visa processing has also been paused for applicants from 75 countries. Officials say the freeze will remain in place until the government can confirm that newcomers will not become a “public charge” or rely on welfare programs.

According to recent White House statements, fraud in federal programs has cost taxpayers over half a trillion dollars annually. The administration has vowed to end what it calls “colossal fraud” draining government resources.

The newly created DOJ National Fraud Enforcement Division will oversee investigations. This unit was formed in early January 2026 to focus specifically on fraud in federally funded programs, including:

  • SNAP (Food Stamps)
  • Medicaid
  • TANF (cash assistance)
  • Head Start
  • Housing assistance

Some benefit payments in Minnesota have been paused pending federal audits, according to sources familiar with the matter. Officials have not disclosed which programs are affected or how many recipients may face delays.

Social Security payments are not impacted. The January 14 payment schedule for retirees and disability beneficiaries remains on track. Recipients born between the 1st and 10th of the month received their deposits today with the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) included.

The White House has not announced changes to Social Security, SSI, or VA benefits at this time. The current focus is on fraud enforcement in state-administered welfare programs.

Immigration enforcement is also tied to the effort. Officials claim that stricter deportation policies and border security will reduce housing costs for Americans and prevent misuse of public assistance by undocumented immigrants.

Federal authorities say the crackdown is just beginning. More states could face similar investigations in the coming weeks.

Benefit recipients should continue to check eligibility and report any changes in income or household status to avoid losing coverage. Fraudulent claims can result in criminal charges, repayment demands, and permanent disqualification from federal programs, according to the Social Security Administration and USDA guidelines.
