Social Security Offices Closed Today – Here’s When They Reopen and How to Get Help

Social Security Administration (SSA) offices are closed today, Saturday, January 24, 2026. If you planned to visit a local office or call for live help, you’ll need to wait until Monday.

SSA field offices and live phone support only operate on weekdays. That means no in-person visits and no live agents on weekends.

But you still have options if you need help right now.

Standard SSA Hours in 2026

Most Social Security offices follow the same schedule across the country. Here’s what to expect:

  • Physical offices: Open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time
  • Live phone support: Available at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time
  • Online services: The my Social Security portal is open 24/7 with no maintenance downtime in 2026

According to the Social Security Administration’s official guidance, you can manage many tasks online without visiting an office or calling. This includes checking your benefits, requesting a replacement Social Security card, and updating your direct deposit information.

Some Offices Are Telephone-Only Right Now

Even when weekdays return, not every office is open for walk-ins. As of late January 2026, several SSA locations are operating by phone only until further notice.

This includes offices in Detroit, Michigan, and Logan, West Virginia. Other locations, such as hearing offices in Hartford, Connecticut, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will switch to telephone-only service starting Monday, January 26, 2026.

The SSA has posted updates on its Office Closings and Emergencies page. You can check your local office status before making the trip.

Federal Holidays Mean Full Closures

Social Security offices close for 11 federal holidays each year. In 2026, that includes upcoming closures on:

  • February 16 (Presidents’ Day)
  • May 25 (Memorial Day)
  • June 19 (Juneteenth)
  • July 3 (Independence Day observed)
  • September 7 (Labor Day)

On these days, no in-person services, live phone help, or appointments are available.

How to Avoid Long Waits When Offices Reopen

If you need to visit in person, the SSA strongly recommends scheduling an appointment ahead of time. Walk-ins are accepted, but wait times can stretch for hours.

According to SSA guidance, the worst times to visit are Monday mornings and the first week of each month. That’s when benefit payments go out and offices see the highest traffic.

You can book an appointment by calling 1-800-772-1213 or using the SSA office locator online. Some offices also offer mobile check-in or on-site kiosks to speed up the process.

What You Can Do Right Now

If your issue can’t wait until Monday, try the my Social Security online portal. It’s available around the clock and handles most common requests without a phone call or office visit.

For urgent questions about benefits, eligibility, or documents, the portal may have the answer you need today.
